The Farm and Animals

During your stay, take time for a stroll round the farm to enjoy the farm's rich and varied animals, wildlife, woodland, fields and landscape.

Lovaton Farm covers 193 acres of rolling Devon countryside with 15 acres of woodland which is an abundance of colour in the spring with snowdrops, daffodils, primroses, bluebells and wild orchids.

Happy animals on the farm

Lovaton Farm is home to a range of rare breed livestock raised from birth including Dexter cows, Lleyn sheep with Gloucester Old Spot, Saddleback and Welsh pigs.

Come and meet “Poppy” the pony, “Mrs Doubtfire” the Gloucester Old Spot sow and “Minnie-Mouse” the smallest Pedigree Dexter heifer at Lovaton. The latest additions to the farm are "Iggy" the bottle fed piglet and "Nellie" the hand reared Jacob lamb.

We have piglets being born all year round with 10 sows receiving the attentions of “Toby” the Gloucester Old Spot Boar. “Millie” and “Mollie” are our two saddleback sows each producing 14 or 15 piglets with two or three litters each year. Quite often Millie and Mollie will talk to you, in their own way!

Happy animals on the farm

Lovaton is home to 90 Dexter and Dexter cross Devon cattle, 90 Pigs and 300 ewes all living on the lush pastures of mid-Devon during the spring, summer and autumn.

Each year over 300 lambs are born during April and May in the spring sunshine. Several lambs are born each year which need to be fed from the bottle into mid-July. They become quite tame and guests can feed these “pet” lambs if they wish. You may even hear them call for their supper!

We have a small number of hens which supply us with eggs. Guests are welcome to collect the eggs for breakfast, if they wish.

Amber and Sky

Finally, meet the farm dogs, “Amber” our pet lurcher with a liking for the TV and Sky the kelpie/collie cross. Also, our two trained working dogs “Red” and “Jess”.
